Arsene’s Confidence In Nigerian Players

FIFA’s chief of global football development, Arsene Wenger while he was manager at Arsenal gave Nigerian players Nwankwo Kanu and Alex Iwobi a chance of a lifetime.

Arsene Wenger defied the odds to make history by setting the transfer record for an African player to an England team in 1999 when he paid Seria A giants Inter Milan £4.5m to earn the services of Kanu.

Kanu had undergone successful career threatening heart surgery. That did not deter Wenger from wanting the gifted Olympic gold medalist among his ranks.

“He is not just a football coach,”

Super Eagles Legend Nwankwo Kanu was quoted, talking about Arsene Wenger whom he helped win two England Premier league titles for Arsenal.

Kanu Said: “He’s a man who knows we are all human beings before footballers. And that’s why he was able to affect the lives of so many people positively.”

Super Eagles player Alex Iwobi also made his breakthrough at Arsenal when Wenger handed the attacking midfielder his debut in a Carabao cup match in 2015.

The Eagles Are Underachievers

Nigeria host Sao Tome and Principe in their final Africa Cup of Nations Group A clash at the Godswill Akpabio stadium in Uyo on Sunday, have won the AFCON thrice in the history of the competition despite reaching the finals on seven occasions.

They also won gold in the men’s football event at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta as well as silver at the Beijing Olympics and bronze at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Despite their feat globally, the former Arsenal coach believes the Eagles are underachievers considering the abundant of talent the country posseses.

“Nigeria has incredible talent but they are the great underachievers of world football,” Wenger was quoted as saying.
